Ohio New Leaders Program

For recent graduates and young people looking for leadership and professional development opportunities related to progressive political and policy change

For the New Leaders Program, CPL Ohio identifies and recruits talented, diverse youth who are interested in careers working toward political and policy change. CPL provides intensive leadership and skills training, as well as mentorship and networking opportunities over the course of the program.

Program Summary

Please note: The 2010 application has now closed and the class has been chosen. The following information is subject to change for future classes, but can give you an idea of how the program works.

Who Should Apply

The Ohio NLP is built for 20-30 year olds who, in general, have 0-2 years professional experience working on progressive political and policy change, but who are considering a career in this field. We will accept both individuals who have and have not finished school.  Our focus is on a group of participants who have similar levels of maturity and life experience, so if you don’t fit into the age range and are still interested, let us know.  We look at each applicant individually, so if you are interested and want to see if you’re a fit, please contact us.

This program is a leadership and professional development opportunity to learn skills, concepts, and ideas that can lead you to be a more effective leader. We have a strong focus on diversity, and encourage people of color, GLBTQ folks, and women, amongst many others, to apply.

Our program is particularly targeted toward young people who are interested in learning about systemic change, and are interested in doing systemic social justice work for the long haul. The Ohio NLP is also a great place for young leaders who have focused primarily on social service and are interested in learning about how systemic political and policy work can be an important avenue to affect change that hits at the root causes of poverty, homelessness, joblessness, and more. Past New Leaders have worked for elected officials, unions, and non-profit organizations and had volunteer experience for issue-based and/or candidate campaigns as well as campus and community organizing.

In 2010, we are expanding the program, and plan for 20-25 diverse participants from across the state.

$100, with scholarships available. CPL Ohio pays for food, as well as space, coaching, and training costs. New Leaders are responsible for travel and housing during workshops. Payment plans are available to spread out what we feel is a very affordable cost. CPL Ohio feels strongly that finances should not be a barrier to involvement, while also working to cover the costs of our non-profit work.
