Who Should Apply

The CPL Political Leaders Fellowship is designed for a diverse group of select individuals who are committed to advancing progressive political or policy change in the state.

Whether it’s through organizational & nonprofit leadership, community activism, issue advocacy, elected office, government or policy leadership, CPL Fellows are passionate leaders working towards long-term progressive change. CPL is also strongly committed to programs that embody the full diversity of our communities.

Each year, CPL's competitive selection process includes an in-depth application review and interview process. Selection is done by state and national staff, as well as faculty and select alumni, is based upon the following criteria:

  • Proven success as a leader and a positive reputation in the community,
  • A vision and passion for progressive political or policy change,
  • Demonstrated commitment to progressive issues through full-time work or volunteering,
  • Willingness to challenge themselves & others and fully commit to all aspects of the Fellowship.

CPL does not select applicants based on their positions with regard to specific policies or issues; however, CPL believes in a progressive political philosophy where our government and policies actively work to ensure equality and freedom for all, as well as promote an investment in the future, a moral economy, peace & security, and global cooperation.

CPL Political Leaders Fellows can come from a variety of personal and professional backgrounds as long as they have demonstrated their leadership potential and are committed to working towards progressive change.

The average age of our Fellows is 37 and classes have included individuals as young as 18, as old as 65 and every age in between.

Past Fellows have included non-profit & organizational leaders, elected officials & campaign staff, and community organizers & volunteer activists, as well as doctors, lawyers, students and teachers.

CPL’s Political Leaders Fellowship is a highly interactive and introspective program. Applicants must demonstrate that they are willing to challenge themselves and each other throughout the course of the program.

The program requires roughly 2-5 hours of work per week or 10-20 hours per month. In order to graduate, Fellows are expected to fully participate in all aspects of the program.

The Center for Progressive Leadership is a 501(c)3, non-partisan organization that doesn’t discriminate or select Fellows on the basis of partisan affiliation.
