What Are CPL Alumni Up To?



Marcus Grignon, a 2009 New Leader Intern, is receiving the Brower Youth Award from the Earth Island Institute for his environmental leadership.

 

 

 

Jamira Burley, a 2010 Pennsylvania New Leaders, was one of the feature speakers at the 2010 Campus Progress National Conference.

 

Bryan Lentz, a CPL alumni, is running for Congress in Pennsylvania and put together a team of other CPL alumni to help him win.

 

Vernelda Grant, an Arizona Fellow, is helping build a better relationship between government and her Apache community

 

Monisha Merchant is helping create more educational opportunities in Colorado through her position on the Board of Regents at the University of Colorado.

 

Raquel Teran, a 2007 Arizona Fellow, was also named Activist of the Year at the 2009 Stylos Awards.

 

Andrea Lawful-Trainer, a 2009 Pennsylvania Fellow, is helping bridge the education gap in southeastern Pennsylvania.

 

CeCe Grant, a 2008 Michigan Fellow, talks about the key to developing compelling progressive messages.

 

Duane Ingram, a 2009 Pennsylvania Fellow, was recently named to the Board of the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force.

 

Four CPL Fellows are elected to office in November of 2009.

 

Amanda Muir, a 2007 Arizona Fellow, is working to support female victims of violence.

 

Christina Thompson, 2009 Colorado Fellow, was recently elected to the Durango City Council.

 

CPL New Leaders Intern Teresa Bravo was recently elected President of the Congressional Hispanic Staff Association.

 

Marc Stier, 2006 alumnus, is the State Director for Health Care for America Now and leading the way for health care reform in one of the most important states in the country.

CPL Pennsylvania graduate Derek Green, a prominent leader in Philadelphia City Council, has been fighting for progressive policy solutions to the housing crisis.

 

Steve Masters, a CPL alumnus, is the Board President of Brit Tzedek v'Shalom, the largest grassroots pro-Israel, pro-peace organization in the country, and a lifetime activist in the Jewish movement.

 

Aubrey Montgomery, a 2006 alumnus, fights for reproductive justice in a state dominated by a conservative state legislature.

 


David Grande, an alumnus from CPL's 2006 Pennsylvania Political Leaders Fellowship, is a professor at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, a co-founder of the National Physician's Alliance and was a policy advisor for Michael Nutter's mayoral campaign.

 

David also wrote an op-ed that was featured in the Philadelphia Inquirer in March of 2009.

We are also excited to announce our 2009 CPL Political Leaders Fellows, a group of over 250 up-and-coming progressive leaders from our core states:

 

They are a highly diverse group of individuals from all stages and backgrounds of life that are changing the face of our country's leadership.

 

This year's class includes individuals like:

From veteran organizers to first-time volunteers, they include doctors, lawyers, teachers, college students, and more. Whatever their political experience, race, gender, or background, they are all passionate about one thing: becoming powerful progressive leaders.

In all of our programs, CPL is committed to developing a generation of future leaders that reflects the diversity of our nation's communities. To that end, we recruit heavily from minority communities for every one of our programs.

Each trainee works with experts, seasoned professionals, elected officials, and trainers to develop their personal leadership skills in each of CPL’s programs.

 

You can also see the profiles of all our leaders here :

Our programs focus on political skills like running for office, managing organizations and campaigns, fundraising and delivering a compelling message; however, the program also focuses on personal development like becoming a better speaker, expanding your personal fundraising base, leading from your own values, and more.

 

In addition, trainees have the opportunity to meet and work with some of the top political and organizational leaders from across the state.
